NWO Medium Sized Investment granted for a combined atomic force/confocal microscope

NWO and ZonMW have granted Carl Figdor, Jack Fransen, and Joost te Riet €588,000 for the purchase of a combined Atomic Force/Confocal Microscope (25% will be matched by the UMC St Radboud). These NCMLS researchers will initially use this microscope to study ‘mechanotransduction’.

Karen Buysse obtains an EMBO long-term post-doctoral fellowship

Karen Buysse has obtained an EMBO long-term fellowship (2 years) in order to perform post-doctoral research at the division of Molecular Genetics of the Department of Human Genetics under supervision of Prof. Hans van Bokhoven.

Activation of human DCs by virus-infected human pancreatic islets.

In a recent publication in Diabetes, researchers of Medical Microbiology and Tumor Immunology (Groups of Frank van Kuppeveld and Gosse Adema) investigated the response of human dendritic cells (DCs) to enterovirus-infected pancreatic cells.

Kolff-grant for Suzanne Heemskerk, Heleen Arts, Joris Robben and Angelique Rops

Suzanne Heemskerk (Intensive Care), Heleen Arts (Human Genetics), Joris Robben (Physiology) and Angelique Rops (Nephrology Research Laboratory) have been awarded a Kolff grant (150-200,000 Euro) for a 2-4-year project by the Dutch Kidney Foundation.

No evidence for a role of retrovirus XMRV in chronic fatigue syndrome

Researchers from the departments of Medical Microbiology, Internal Medicine, and Experimental Urology describe a failure to find evidence for a role of a new human retrovirus in Dutch patients with chronic fatigue syndrome in the British Medical Journal.

4.5 M Euro for computer model of energy metabolism

NWO and ZonMW have announced today that they will fund with €13 M three Dutch Centres for Systems Biology, including the Centre for Systems Biology and Bioenergetics (CSBB) at the RUNMC. The CSBB will receive € 4.5 M to study mitochondrial energy metabolism.

Koningin Wilhelmina prize for Carl Figdor

The Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) has awarded Carl Figdor the Koningin Wilhelmina research prize 2009 (KWO). The 2 M Euro prize will be used to perform multidisciplinary research into the role of the immune system in the fight against cancer.
