NCMLS Graduate Course (2 EC)
At the start of the PhD project, an introductory course is organised. The course highlights NCMLS structure, ongoing scientific research and a multitude of different state-of-the-art techniques that are used in life science research. Since topics are taught by principal investigators from NCMLS departments that have these techniques up and running, this course also gives the opportunity to get acquainted with the people who can offer support in the implementation of such techniques to your research questions. This course is organised twice a year, and can usually be followed within the first six months of the PhD project. Furthermore, it has also proven to be a valuable opportunity to get to know fellow-PhD students from other departments. Information on registration can be obtained from the NCMLS office (M.Achour@ncmls.nl).
NCMLS Seminars (2 EC)
Throughout the year, many scientists visit the NCMLS and give seminars on their field of study. The NCMLS seminar committee sets the criteria for qualification of NCMLS seminars, stimulating high-quality presentations. NCMLS seminars are announced through email, posters and the NCMLS website. Two types of seminars are organised:
- "NCMLS Lecture Series" features outstanding senior speakers (national or international) who are most influential in their field being/ that is of broad NCMLS interest.
- "NCMLS Noon series"features speakers (national or international) who have published regularly in top-tier journals and have an outstanding international reputation in their field.
NCMLS In the Spotlight (2 EC)
"NCMLS in the Spotlight" draws attention to recently published breakthrough articles from the NCMLS. The PI gives an introduction / overview addressing the main question: How and why was this work published in a high-impact journal? Yearly, 10 are organised. These are announced through email, posters and the NCMLS website.
NCMLS Technical Forums (2 EC)
Technical forums cover different techniques used in molecular and cellular research or more general topics that are useful for your PhD career. Topics may be very different in nature, ranging from microarray technology, career development, immunology, statistics etc. They are organised four times a year by PhD students from the NCMLS, and two times a year by one of the RUNMC PhD councils, including the NCMLS PhD committee. Technical Forums are announced through email, posters and the NCMLS website.
NB. 1 EC point may be obtained by volunteering to organise a Technical Forum.
NCMLS Two-Day PhD Retreat (4 EC)
The Two-Day PhD Retreat is organised yearly for NCMLS PhD students. PhD students in their last year present their work in oral presentations; other PhD students present their work via posters. Traditionally, a renowned keynote speaker is invited for the evening programme. Apart from the science, this event is valued for the opportunity to meet and get to know fellow-PhD students. NCMLS awards prizes for the best oral presentation, best poster and the best debator. All PhD students will get the announcement per email. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
NCMLS New Frontiers Symposium (4 EC)
Yearly, the NCMLS organises an international two-day symposium across one of thematic areas of NCMLS with the intention of exploring the newest scientific research and pioneering developments. These 'New Frontiers' symposia are proving to be highly successful with fruitful discussions on the latest developments in the chosen field in front of a large international audience.
