Dr. Egbert Oosterwijk, Associate
Professor at the Department of Urology, has been awarded a Marie
Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) grant of € 3.6 million funded
by the European Commission under FP7 for 'Training scientists to
develop and Image materials for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative
Medicine (iTERM). It brings together 6 renowned research institutes
and 2 SME. The network will employ 12 PhD students and one postdoc
who will develop new materials and implants for the bio-engineering
of soft tissue (skin, urogenital) and hard (bone) tissue as well as
state-of-the-art novel multimodality visualization procedures to
monitor the behaviour of implants.

A €4 Million European training
grant has been awarded to an international consortium led and
coordinated by Prof. Gert Jan Veenstra (Dept. Molecular
Developmental Biology). From the same department computational
biologist Dr. Simon van Heeringen also contributes to the
project.

The European training network on
Developmental and Computational Biology (acronym DevCom) will work
towards bridging the gap between developmental and computational
biology and aims to elucidate embryonic gene regulatory and
developmental networks, including those associated with disease, by
integrating molecular-, developmental-, statistical- and
computational approaches.

DevCom will train 12 PhD students
and two experienced researchers at eight partner institutions in
five countries: The Netherlands (Nijmegen and Utrecht), United
Kingdom (London and Norwich), Spain (Seville), France (Paris and
Evry) and Denmark (Aarhus).

Multidisciplinary Initiative on Neuroacanthocytosis - EMINA-2:
Dissecting the molecular pathophysiology of Chorea-Acanthocytosis".
Knockout mice, Drosophila models, patient-derived stem
cells, peptides and novel fluorescent tools will be used to unravel
the molecular basis of the rare neurodegenerative disease

capacity to translate basic research into routine Diagnostics. One
particular highlight in his scientific career is the discovery of
the genetic causes of over fifty rare syndromes. Han Brunner
is a very inspiring speaker and capable leader coaching and
motivating talented scientists and clinicians to advance themselves
and the field of genetics.
