Profile
Research interests include systems pharmacology, drug transporters and toxicity. Current projects study the role of membrane transporters in drug disposition and toxicity, with special emphasis on kidney, liver, brain and multidrug resistance in the malaria parasite. In addition, we focus on the development of predictive urinary biomarkers for adverse drug reactions and kinetic-dynamic modeling in understanding therapeutic and off-target bioenergetic drug effects. An important goal is to translate molecular-based knowledge of drug transport and selective toxicity to the clinical setting, to assist in the development of more effective and safer drug therapies.
Frans Russel is full professor in Molecular Pharmacology and Toxicology at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre and the Faculty of Science. He heads the Molecular Section of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and is Director of the Bachelor's and International Master's programme in Biomedical Sciences.
